Weather wise it is going to be BRUTAL this weekend. There is a winter storm warning with effect from 9:00pm today to 6:00am Sunday. A foot of snow is expected and the temperature will drop to -10°F (-23°C) with windchills plummeting to around -30°F (-34°C)!!! I’ll have to run to the grocery store and bring in more firewood after I am done with this post. Time to cook a huge pot of soup and make a nice loaf of crusty bread to sit out the storm. We will have to hunker down for the weekend. No Christmas shopping to look forward to but a lot of snow shovelling is in the works….arghhh!
Speaking of soup, this Split Pea and Sausage Soup is one I made a few days ago. Spicy, thick, and satisfying, this soup is a meal in itself. I used up the remaining turkey stock I had made after the Thanksgiving dinner but chicken stock will definitely work. For making thick, creamy soups an immersion blender is a very helpful tool. It beats having to tranfer that hot liquid in batches to a blender. If you do not have an immersion blender, now is the time to drop hints for Christmas. 🙂

Enjoy…..and have a wonderful day! 😎

Wow Biren! Yes, please go to the store and get lots more firewood so you can hibernate inside all weekend. That’s pretty brutal weather you’re getting there. Stay warm, my friend! We’re used to that weather here in Edmonton though. I remember last year or two years ago coming home from company Christmas parties and the temperature on the car reading -52 Celsius! I kid you not. I just shoveled the driveway 3 times yesterday. Proud to be Canadian! 😀
You have the coolest bowls and eating utensils! I love how those bowls actually remind me of little peas. Your soup definitely sounds fantastic in this nasty winter weather. I’d have one bowl before shoveling and then 2 more after shoveling…so 3 bowls for me please 😛
I love that you also added the other veggies to flavor this lively soup. Sounds delicious! Have a great (and WARM) weekend, dear.

We have had a lot of snow and it is only early December. I shudder to think of January, our coldest month. Yes, I am sure you guys over at Edmonton have pretty brutal winters too. -52 deg Celcius is really, really brutal!!! Thank God we have central heating at home!
Those bowls hold quite a bit of soup. I like their shape. 🙂 I’ll be making more soup after I get home from the grocery store.

Hearty Soup perfect for the winter.
Victoria says
This soup is perfect for a day shoveling snow! I hope the meteorologists lied and it won’t be as brutal as they said, but if they’re right, curling up with this soup will be a tremendous relief 🙂

A lovely comforting soup!!

Love the addition of the cumin and coriander. I’ve never used either in split pea soup. The moment I read the recipe I thought ah ha, what a great way to up the flavor. Good luck with all the snow. Looks like we’re going to avoid the worst of the potential weather here in Indiana. Kate

I love sausage in this! I’m going to try this for sure! Thanks!

Biren, that’s insane! I can’t believe it’s that cold. I guess your heaters will be working overtime this weekend. I think you should totally remake this soup for the weekend! I can’t imagine anything that would be more warming during a snowy weekend like the one you have coming up.
Brownieville Girl says
And there I was feeling sorry for myself because it is so cold here!!
Your soup looks perfect.
Angie's Recipes says
-10…that’s what we had last week…it’s freezing, but with a nice warm sausage soup, you would have no problem at all. :-))

Hi, I found your blog from my mom’s blog. I love how you have so many great soup recipes! The only type of blended thick soup that I’ve ever made is butternut squash, so I love getting new ideas. Will probably try your spicy pumpkin soup first. I had pumpkin soup one time and fell in love with it. Great stuff for this freezing weather!
Biren says
Hi Sharon! Thanks for stopping by. I love your mom’s blog. She is a great cook and has fantastic recipes.
I know you all love spicy food and that soup can be spiced up. I hope you like it. Please visit again soon. 🙂

I wish we would get some of that snow. We’re so dry here in Denver. That soup looks wonderful! I’ve made something similar. I love…love…love…those soup bowls.

We are pretty much snowed in right now and it is still snowing hard. Made some soup yesterday and will be making another pot today. It definitely is soup weather. I like those bowls too. 🙂

Holy smokes that sounds cold! Keep warm and eat lots of this yummy soup! I think I’m going to have to make this, it sounds soooo good!
Biren says
Hey Julie, thanks for visiting despite your technical difficulties. I hope your computer is up and running again.
We are pretty much snowed in right now. Hubby went out earlier to throw the snnow off the driveway, about 8 inches. It is still coming down, hard and furious. Temperatures will plummet tonight…brrr!
Will be making more soup 😉

Brrrrr! I don’t envy you the freezing temps but I do envy this bowl of split pea and sausage soup, yum- perfect comfort food for this weekend, stay warm:)
Stella says
Hey Biren, yum! My mom used to make her soup almost this way. It was good, but I can tell yours is better. In fact, I think I’m going to try it with some vegan sausage. I can do that, right (smile)?!
Hope you guys get to go shopping soon with less snow troubles…

Looks like it’s really cold there too as I’m seeing lots of soups from you lately. All of them look very delicious…perfect for the freezing weather. I hope my girl cooks for me 😛

Mary, you have a lovely daughter. You must be so proud of her. I am sure she will cook some soup to warm your heart. 🙂

It was actually a bit warmer here in NYC this weekend. But still without a doubt soup weather! This looks so warm and hearty. I hope you stayed home and ate this around a fire!

I think we had about 17 inches for the weekend. It is dreadfully cold right now with dangerous windchills. I need to cook more soup.

I want this bowl of soup. So comforting.

Hi Biren
Omg!!! I feel worried for you! I just got back from chilly weather (-3 C) but the forecasts you’re getting for your area are just scary!!! Please make sure you have enough firewood!!!
This looks absolutely fabulous and has all the things I love in soup! A bowl would have been wonderful when my face was almost numb with cold last week, and I could not make my own soup 😛 Love the teardrop shape serving bowls and yes, nothing beats an immersion blender – the blade on mine is almost worn out from use. Time to get a new one, maybe? 😉

Such a warming and delicious soup! Wonderful with the addition of sausage!
Nancy/SpicieFoodie says
And I thought we were having horrible weather here, I’m not going to be complaining any more. Your soup looks like the perfect soup to keep you warm on those frigid winter days. I love split peas and I just know your soup, with all those yummy ingredients, tasted amazing! Thanks for sharing a wonderful recipe.
Magic of Spice says
What a wonderful soup recipe…and those bowls are divine 🙂
Hope you are staying warm, I miss my fireplace so much when it’s cold out…Not that it gets as cold here, but the idea of it.
Stay safe, warm and cozy!
Shae says
I have a question. I made this soup this evening and the split peas were not even CLOSE to done after 45 minutes. I even turned the heat up to medium and put a lid on the pot and cooked it for another half hour and they still weren’t done. What am I doing wrong?
Biren says
Split peas normally do not require soaking and they take a short amount of time to cook. However older split peas may require a longer cooking time. Try presoaking them before cooking.
Cristhy says
Where have you been all my life?? I just want to say your recipes/photos look amazing! I have to try them all! Thank you for blogging!
