Air Fried Shrimp Toast, an old time Malaysian favorite made even more quick and easy using the air fryer. They are super light and crispy.

Back in Malaysia, this Shrimp Toast is literally everyone’s favorite. The kids especially love them and like Spring Rolls, you can never make enough to satisfy everyone. The only down side to these tasty and crispy treats, is that they are deep fried. My Air Fried Shrimp Toast will take away any guilt that you may have eating the deep fried version. 😉
Cooking Oil And Flavor
Air frying is all the rage these days because of obvious reasons. You can make delicious, crispy food using just a fraction of cooking oil versus their deep fried counterpart. Let’s face it. Cooking oil adds flavor to food and less cooking oil means a little less flavor. As such, some adjustments need to be made to traditional deep fried recipes to make them just as delicious.

Adjustments Made To This Air Fried Shrimp Toast
I have made these several times over the past weeks and each time I made the shrimp paste a little differently. My taste testers willingly tasted each batch and actually waited to devour them. We all finally agreed that this batch tasted the best. 🙂

The Shrimp Paste
I added butter, green onions (white part only), and sesame seeds to the shrimp paste. The butter added calories but it also added a lot of flavor to the shrimp paste which is needed minus the amount of cooking oil needed for deep frying. Traditionally, the shrimp toast is covered with sesame seeds sprinkled and pressed on the top. To make things easier and a little less messy, I decided to add raw sesame seeds into the shrimp paste.

Making the Shrimp Paste Sandwich
It is best to use white sandwich bread for this recipe. Remove the crust so that the toast will be evenly crispy throughout without a hard crust. Spread a thin layer of shrimp paste over the slices of bread and brush a layer of cooking oil over the top. Then, sprinkle raw sesame seeds all over. Here, you can use more sesame seeds if you prefer.

Cutting and Air Frying the Shrimp Paste Sandwich
The iconic shape for Air Fried Shrimp Toast is the triangle. Some people do cut them into rectangles. It is totally up to you. The easiest way to do that is to flip half the slices over the other half like a sandwich and then cut each sandwich diagonally into triangles. Now, your shrimp paste sandwiches are ready for air frying.
It only takes 5 minutes at 375⁰F/180⁰C to air fry these shrimp paste sandwiches. You will most likely have to do it in two batches unless you have a large air fryer like this Flip Up & Away Ninja Digital Air Fry Countertop Oven (affiliate link).
